What Does Simon Do?

I completed a PhD in particle physics, but I am no longer involved in research.

I was a director and producer with the BBC TV Science Unit for six years, but I no longer direct or produce.

Today I work as a freelancer, working on whatever interests me. It is an incredibly privileged position to
be in, and I enjoy every minute of it.

One of the things I do is give talks. Here I am after a talk in Hyderabad, India.

The main objective of my work is to communicate science
in a variety of ways (e.g., TV and books) to different audiences
(e.g. schoolchildren and the general public).

For example, although I no longer work behind the camera,
I do occasionally present science programmes on TV and
am interviewed from time to time.

Similarly, I also present radio programmes and am interviewed
on stations such as Radio 4 and Radio 5 Live.

I have spent several years writing (Fermat's Last Theorem &
The Code Book). I have now embarked on my third book,
the details of which I cannot disclose yet.

I have written several articles for newspapers and magazines,
in America and Britain. At the moment, I am reluctant to write
articles, simply due to a lack of time.

Similarly, I don't review as many books as I used to.

I do enjoy lecturing, but I don't lecture as much as I used to.

I enjoy innovating new projects, such as Theatre of Science,
which puts scientists on the stage in mainstream venues.

Recently, I have been developing a number of projects that are
not media-related. For example, one of my current projects
endeavours to build links between universities and schools.

An increasing part of work involves promoting science in schools.
This includes moaning about the terrible crisis in maths and science
teaching, i.e., Britain does not have enough science teachers,
a situation that seems set to only worsen due to Government inaction.

Recently, I have started to shed my hermit lifestyle and have become
involved in bigger organisations. I now sit on the board of the
Science Media Centre, and I have been invited to be a trustee of the
National Museum of Science and Industry and NESTA. I am also an
ambassador for ActionAid.
