Senior Workshops

Code breaking develops skills in problem solving and data handling and also demonstrates the 'real life' application of maths. Enigma Project visits enable students to see that maths does truly exist out side of the classroom, and that there is scope to continue to study maths beyond GCSE.

Solving codes by frequency analysis involves the handling and interpretation of data. Looking at the number of ways the Enigma machine can be set up involves permutations and combinations. Internet codes introduce one-way functions and factorising.

Hour-long workshops in the classroom introduce these ideas and also give scope for further investigation. I leave teachers with ideas for extending some of the topics raised during the presentation and also 10 copies of the Code Book
CD-ROM. These CDs can be the basis for further study into the maths and history of code breaking.
