Demonstrating the Enigma Cipher Machine to Year 9 pupils

The Enigma project has been presented to students of all ages from Year 4 to Year 13. The presentation is adapted according to pupil's ages and abilities. The usual format involves an hour-long code breaking workshop with classroom sized groups (i.e. up to 35 children). This set-up works best as it enables the deliverer to maintain an element of interaction. With younger students this is particularly important, but with older students who are more prepared to sit still for an hour, lecture style events for larger numbers can be organised.

Naturally, we aim to make the project flexible, and we are more than happy to work within your school timetable and adapt the presentation to suit your plans and ideas. Claire Greer will bring a laptop and data projector, so no special equipment is necessary. These can be set up anywhere with a power supply and a white wall/board to project images onto. Visits can be arranged to last a whole day and involve a number of classes, or just one or two classes over a morning or afternoon.

We have designed a package containing ideas for follow up work which will be given to each school after their visit. Also, 10 'Code Book CD-ROMS', containing a wealth of information on the history of codes and some great interactive encryption and decryption puzzles will enable students to extend the themes introduced during your Enigma Project visit.

There is enormous scope for the Enigma Project to tie in with maths or technology weeks. The Enigma machine also makes the perfect prop at a Maths Master class or as part of a special activity day.
