Other Science Talks

There are lots of great science lectures going on in Britain and around the world. Below is a list of websites run by institutions who organise science talks. The list is somewhat biased towards London, but if you know of a good website that lists science lectures in, say, Kansas or Cairo, then please email me and I will consider adding it to the list.

Gresham College
Talks on a variety of subjects from science to theology in the heart of London. Previous topics include 'Is Genetic Knowledge Good For Us?', and 'Edmund Halley: On The Shoulder Of Giants'.

Royal Institute
This 200 year old institution has a variety of public lectures, including Friday evening lectures, and the televised Christmas lectures. Some lectures are suitable for children aged 11 to 18.

Institute of Ideas
Thought provoking debates, in conjunction with the British Museum amongst others. Topics have included: ‘The Moral Malaise’, and ‘Science: Can We Trust The Experts?’

Science Museum
As well as being a warehouse of scientifiic curiosities, London's Science Museum has activities, interactive displays, regular lectures, demonstrations and discussions.

Science Year
A series of fun, science-based talks and activities aimed at children as part of Science Year. So far talks have included: ‘The Brain of the Future’ and ‘From Human to Superhuman’.

Cafe Scientifique
Not so much a lecture, rather a short talk by a scientist on a controversial topic followed by a discussion over a civilised glass of wine. Venues all over the UK.

Royal Society
Founded in 1660, The Royal Society is the national academy of science, involved in a varied program of lectures, exhibitions, and public dialogue events throughout the country.

This site holds an invaluable list of Science centres around the world, many of them hosting lectures, all of them full of activities. Find out more about Space Travel in Singapore, or Particle Physics in Paris.

psci.com
This site is all about science communication, and as such it includes an internet guide to talks in the fields of science and technology. Check out the Calendar of Events to find a list of science talks.

Institute for Cultural Research
Saturday afternoon lectures and discussion at Cavendish Square, London. Talks have included: ‘Grooming, Gossip and the Mobile Phone’
and ‘The Body Electric’

Hampstead Scientific Society
Lectures on a broad range of scientific topics, ranging from ‘Does Alternative Medicine Exist?’ and ‘M-theory – the theory of everything?’ to ‘The Strange Origin of the English Apple’

Cheltenham Festival of Science
A brand new Science Festival that kicked off in 2002. It is a fantastic bonanza of lectures, debates and activities for all ages. The next festival will take place in July 2003.
