Secret codes and ciphers are ideal
topics for investigation at after school or Saturday morning
Maths Clubs. Code breaking develops problem-solving skills and
promotes logical thinking, but it falls outside the scope of
most regular maths classes.
Children of all ages love playing
at being spies and deciphering coded messages. Less able
pupils can easily grasp the fundamental principles behind
encoding and decoding, and more able pupils can extend the
topic as far as they wish, developing their own codes and
challenging their friends. The Code Book CD-ROM also offers
some great interactive opportunities and exercises.
Enigma Project visits can be
arranged to your Maths Club. It could make an ideal
introduction to codes, or an excellent climax to a unit of
work, or a fun treat to end a term. An hour -long talk can be
followed by an hour in the ITC suit completing a 'mini cipher challenge' based
on the CD-ROM.
